Winter's Bone (2010)

Unique story, uncommon setting, great acting.

Dragged in some parts, somewhat unconvincing as a whole.

Best picture? No. Totally worthwhile? Depends on your taste.

Overall—pretty good. Watch it if you like a feeling of brooding, the Ozarks, and very strong female protagonists.

  1. Considering your partiality to films that study mood/culture rather than story, movies where many things are left unsaid, where "not much" happens, and where female characters are strong and complex, I really thought you would love this film a lot more than this review suggests. I remember watching it and thinking "Cait will probably love it".

  2. I thought I would love it too!

Something about the whole meth cooking Midwest vibe turned into noir just didn't sit well with me. Replace all the woodlands with farms and you basically have a loose sketch of what parts of my hometown have become over the last few years. In real life it feels very different, and even though I know it's not fair to hold the movie up to some sort of verite standard, I just couldn't get into it.

Like I said on another friend's comment on the Joan Rivers doc, all I seem to be able to get into or enjoy lately is children's media, for whatever reason. Maybe I will re-watch Winter's Bone in the future and really enjoy it. Who knows?

PS. I sent you another letter today.
