True Grit (2010)

- Fantastic
- Beautiful to behold
- Quotable
- Makes me want to go out into the wilderness and overall be braver, stronger, and better at using the vocabulary I have
- All around excellent

  1. Other than my difficulties with understanding Jeff Daniels in several scenes (makes it difficult to quote him :)), I thought it was a solid Cohen effort. Not as great as No Country, in my opinion, but definitely wonderful.
Gorgeously shot, phenomenal ensemble. Hailee Steinfeld was incredible, she was an acting powerhouse to the point where the two leading men in the cast began to seem like supporting actors. My parents didn't even recognize Matt Damon. After the film they kept asking me which character he played, and then refused to accept my answer.

  2. Fantastic! I liked this one more than No Country just because of the Steinfeld, I think. I too had difficulty understanding Jeff Daniels. But it added to the appeal. Yay!

  3. Bad ass performances. (Hailee Steinfeld, you blow my mind.)Mediocre story. Mix it all together and you get a pretty fucking good movie. I'll probably never watch it again, but it sure as hell beats John Wayne.

  4. I actually really enjoyed the story, mostly because it is not one that a female lead is noramlly thought to pursue. Usually it is the sons that will avenge a father's death, and I really liked that switch over. Also, I loved the rivalry between Damon and Jeff Bridges. One thing I didn't like - Jeff Bridges is starting to play an archetype character. His character in Crazy Heart was so similar to this character. I hope he does't fall into the Michael Cera effect of always playing the same role.

The girl's acting was great... I also loved that she wasn't glorified with insane amounts of make-up or waxed eyebrows or vast efforts of being touched up. That definitely added to her beauty along with her valor and dedication.

Finally, the endings of Coen movies always just end abruptly and I can't decide if I hate that or if I enjoy it. I would watch it again.

  5. Cohen brothers were due for a good movie after the last two pieces of crap to come out of their ^((&(%&: "Burn After Reading" and "A Serious Man".

Intriguing storyline, fantastic acting from pretty much EVERY character, and hilariousness.... wth was up with the PG-13 rating? Was that considered mediocre violence?

Wish there was more Josh Brolin.... He was so good in "No Country for Old Men"...

PS.... needed more eating fish scenes

PPS... Academy Award nominees galore! Please don't let "Tron" beat you

  6. @Chow: I think the PG-13 was due to the chopping of the fingers, the stabbing, the shooting, the depravity, and the corpse in the tree. And the hanging. And the handful of "damnation!"s.

PS, RE: Fish eating scenes? Please. Why would any movie even try. No one will ever beat the /Severed Ways/ fish eating scene and the eye-raping man-poop shot that followed.

@ Amy: I wouldn't worry about Bridges getting sucked into a pattern of roles. He's had a very diverse career, playing everything from an alien (See /Starman/(1984) for a surprisingly good movie) to "The Dude". I doubt two in a row of a drunk country-ish guy is going to ruin anything, especially considering that his turn as Reuben "Rooster" Cogburn was released at the same time as /TRON: Legacy/.

@Alla: Apparently my corrective comment failed, but it is indeed Jeff Bridges and not Jeff Daniels that we're supposed to be talking about here. Thank God.

    @ Michelle: bad ass indeed.
